E-waste: Where do your gadgets go to die?

We can all agree that most of us rely on at least one electronic gadget in our modern daily lives. Cell phones, computers, televisions etc. Where would we be without them? While these gadgets make our lives easier, it can also makes some peoples' lives more miserable. Electronic waste (E-waste) is a fast growing problem and the numbers involved are alarming. Only a small fraction is fully recycled and to add to the problem, a number of developing countries are willing to help the rich clean their mess. Several tons of discarded electronic goods are shipped to poor countries everyday for the purpose of "recycling".

Join our Awareness Workshop as we learn and discover the sad and surprising fate of all our fancy gadgets. We'll also look at what steps we can take to reduce the problem and learn how to be a smarter consumer. Disposing of E-waste isn’t as easy as pressing the delete button.

The workshop will be followed by a casual get-together at a local coffee shop to give everyone the chance to get to know one another and discuss the workshop in a more relaxed atmosphere. Please note that a reservation is required for all workshops.

E-Waste: 携帯の死に場所はどこ？

私たちは誰しもが電化製品に頼って生活をしているのではないでしょうか。携帯、パソコン、テレビ....こうした機械は我々の生活を快適にすると同時に、一方で、他の人達の住み心地を悪くしています。E-waste(廃家電)は近年増加している都市の廃棄問題です。完全にリサイクルされている電化製品は、ほんの一部にすぎません。さらには、裕福な人々のこうした廃棄物をたくさんの貧しい国々が進んで引き取っています。”リサイクル”という名目で、毎日数トンの使用済電化製品がこうした国々へ輸出されています。 

英語でのインタラクティブなワークショップを通じて、華やかな電化製品の裏側に潜んでいる悲しい現実を学び、一緒に考えてみませんか？私達が購入した電化製品を廃棄するのは、”DEL(デリート)”キーを押すほど、簡単ではありません。こうした問題への取組や、どうしたら、より賢い消費者になれるかを皆さんと考えたいと思います。
