MISSION & HISTORY.

The International Volunteer Group (IVG) - Japan is dedicated to leveraging resources and mobilizing support for projects that champion the well-being and prosperity of  future generations both within Japan and across the globe. With a steadfast commitment to three core pillars – Environment Preservation, Health and Well-being, and Social Development – we strive to cultivate positive change and empower communities.

The International Volunteer Group (IVG) - Japan is an organization dedicated to connecting people through volunteer activities and fundraising events for charitable causes. One of their premier events is the Tokyo Yamathon, a unique and engaging event that has gained popularity both locally and internationally.

The Tokyo Yamathon is essentially a walking challenge where participants walk around Tokyo's Yamanote Line train loop, which encompasses many of the city's major districts. The event typically involves teams of three or four people attempting to walk the entire loop, which is approximately 42 kilometers long, within a set time limit, often 12 hours. The main goal is to complete the circuit, visiting all the Yamanote Line stations along the way, and taking photos at designated spots to prove completion.

The origins of the Tokyo Yamathon date back to the early 2010s, and it has been held annually, growing in popularity and size each year. The event is not just about endurance and exploring Tokyo, but it also serves a charitable purpose. Participation fees and donations collected during the Yamathon are given to various charities, supporting causes such as disaster relief, education, and environmental protection.

Over the years, the Tokyo Yamathon has become more than just a walking challenge; it's a cultural and social event that brings together people from diverse backgrounds. Participants enjoy the camaraderie, the challenge, and the opportunity to see Tokyo from a different perspective, all while contributing to a good cause. The event emphasizes community, inclusivity, and making a positive impact, aligning with the broader objectives of the International Volunteer Group to foster a sense of global community and support charitable causes through innovative and enjoyable events.

01.

IVG-Japan founded. Originally we worked with Oxfam Japan to create awareness and raise funds. We held small picnics, workshops, and fundraising parties. The more we worked, the more adventurous we became, and with Sea to Summit and Tokyo Yamathon, we established our own successful niche fundraising events – unlike any other in Japan

02.

Yamathon inaugural event in November 2010 saw 110 people and 29 teams compete,  we raised 129,000 JPY for Oxfam Japan’s Democratic Republic of Congo appeal.

03.

5TH YAMATHON

April 2013 saw 430 people hit the streets of Tokyo. 1.6 million yen was raised and 100% of funds went to Oxfam Japan’s Democratic Republic of Congo appeal.

04.

10TH YAMATHON

1000 participants helped to raise 4.1 million yen in our 10th Yamathon in May 2018. Fundraising helped build two classrooms for a school in Thuong Hoa commune in Vietnam and provided toilet facilities.

International Volunteer Group -Japan officially incorporated as a Non-Profit Organisation.

Board of Directors established.

06.

In our 11th Yamathon, we decided to focus our fundraising back on Japan and partnered with NPO Yokohama Children’s Hospice Project to help build what will be the second children’s hospice in Japan. 1100 people participated, raising 3.8 million yen for the hospice.

14th YAMATHON results in our largest ever fundraising event,  8.5 million yen, bringing our contribution to more than 16.5 million yen for development and operational support of NPO Yokohama Children’s Hospice.

08.

IVG-Japan rebranded, new mission statement and core pillars of focus established – Environment Preservation, Health and Well-being, and Social Development. Board leadership team expanded.

OUR
ENVIRONMENT
.

IVG recognizes the urgent need to protect and preserve our planet for the benefit of current and future generations. Through fundraising initiatives, we support projects that promote environmental conservation, sustainability, and the preservation of natural resources. By fostering eco-conscious practices and advocating for environmental stewardship, we strive to create a healthier and more sustainable world for all.

PARTNERS.

At IVG-Japan, fostering a deep understanding of our supported charities and causes is paramount. We prioritize engaging with each charity on a personal level, taking the time to comprehend their mission, values, and the impact they strive to make. Through direct communication, site visits, and ongoing dialogue, we immerse ourselves in their work, gaining insights into the communities they serve and the challenges they confront. By delving into their initiatives, we not only develop a profound appreciation for their efforts but also ensure that our support is aligned with their needs and goals. This holistic approach enables us to forge meaningful partnerships, driving tangible change and maximizing our collective impact on the causes we champion.
